A Century of Stewardship: PAGCS Celebrates 100 Years
The Philadelphia Association of Golf Course Superintendents (PAGCS) proudly celebrated its 100th anniversary on October 30 at Union League Liberty Hill, bringing together leaders from across the golf industry for an evening of recognition, reflection, and shared history. The event marked the conclusion of the Association’s Centennial Year and honored the individuals and traditions that have shaped one of the nation’s oldest superintendent organizations.
“Inspirational is the best word I can use,” said Pat Michener, newly elected President of the PAGCS. “To gather so many influential people in one room to celebrate the PAGCS was a major feat, and all involved should be very proud.”
Honoring Excellence
The Association’s highest honor, the Eberhard Steiniger Award, was presented to
John Gosselin, Golf Course Superintendent at Aronimink Golf Club, soon to host the 2026 PGA Championship. Like the award’s namesake, Gosselin represents the pinnacle of professional integrity, mentorship, and long-standing contribution to the golf turf industry.
A Keynote that Resonated
Featured keynote speaker Coach Jay Wright, Hall of Fame basketball coach and two-time national champion, delivered a compelling message about leadership, preparation, and team culture—drawing powerful parallels between coaching and the role of a golf course superintendent.
A Look Back at 100 Years
A special tribute video—coordinated with the help of Turf Equipment and Supply’s
Andy Donelson—highlighted the Association’s storied past and featured reflections from former presidents and retired superintendents. It underscored the deep roots of collaboration, education, and professional advancement that define the PAGCS.
About the Philadelphia Association of Golf Course Superintendents (PAGCS)
Founded in 1925, the PAGCS promotes professional growth, education, and industry collaboration throughout the Greater Philadelphia region. The Association is dedicated to advancing the profession of Golf Course Superintendents through innovation, environmental stewardship, advocacy, and leadership within the golf industry.
The centennial celebration was made possible through the dedication and planning of a committed leadership team spearheaded by Greg D’Antonio, Immediate Past President of PAGCS and Golf Course Superintendent at Concord Country Club; Kristen Liebsch, PAGCS Executive Director; and Bill Corcoran of Baroness USA, Centennial Committee Chairman and longtime Vendor Liaison to the Board; along with former presidents, and multiple industry leaders from the GCSAA, Philadelphia PGA, USGA & Penn State University.
“As we mark 100 years, we celebrate not only our history but the people whose passion and professionalism continue to elevate this profession,” PAGCS leadership shared. “This anniversary reflects our commitment to education, innovation, and the next century of excellence in golf course management.”
